How to Involve Your Children in Lowering
Your Utility Bill

In our modern day society where energy sources are dwindling and the cost of water and electricity are constantly rising, it is essential that every family functions as a unit to lower the household energy and water consumption not only to save the environment but decrease the utility bill at the end of the month as well.

Remember, any money saved by doing so can once again be put to one of many better uses within the home, not to mention the impact it would have on our environment if all homes operated in a energy and water friendly manner.

Here are one or two suggestions as to how your children can help to make your home more energy friendly and cost efficient.
*        Limit Gaming Time
With the rapid advance in technology nowadays, gaming has become a very popular pastime amongst our children (even sometimes the adults).
It is a relatively safe and controlled environment for the children of today to experience escapism without having to leave the home.
But as with anything in life, too much of any one thing is not healthy, so try to put limits on the amount of time your children spend in front of a gaming console or computer.
Just remember, when your children are gaming, they use energy for the gaming console, TV and normally the home entertainment system.
If you go and do the basic calculations, there are three home appliances running for extended periods of time if you don’t control it which equals a dramatic increase in your homes energy consumption, which translates to a relatively high increase in your monthly energy costs.
If for no other reason, this should be adequate cause for you to limit the gaming time to perhaps one or two hours a day during the week and perhaps four hours per day on the weekends.
Not only will this limit the increase of your energy bill but also be healthier for the children.
Also try to instill the discipline of unplugging the electrical gaming devices while they are not being used and having them packed neatly away.
Not only will this be a good lesson in tidiness but also once again reduce energy use as most of these consoles still use a relative amount of energy when they are in stand-by mode.
*        Save on water usage
Believe it or not, it is possible to introduce a culture of natural resource conservancy in your children while they are still in the very early stages of development.
By doing this not only will you reduce the cost to you by a lower energy bill, but also achieve a lot by raising a resource conscious child.
Remember, the standards and principles which your child learns in the first couple of years of his or her life form the foundation by which they will act for the rest of their lives.
Simple things such as teaching them not to leave the tap open while brushing their teeth or only using a half a glass of water to gargle with can go a long way to saving on water costs.
You don’t want to take all the fun out of growing up, so why not limit the fun of playing in a full bath tub of water to weekends and restrict the rest to lesser amounts of water.
There are so many ways in which the children in your home can help to make a difference to your energy bill at the end of the day.
But don’t be mistaken this not only applies to the children, we as adults too are responsible for saving our natural resources in a world where their availability is becoming rapidly depleted.
By saving these resources where we can, not only will we drastically reduce our monthly utility costs but will help to save our planet for generations to come.
Wouldn’t it be nice to know that the actions you take today may save and improve the environment for your children and their children and many generations of your family whom would like to enjoy the same privileges as what you had the privilege of having.

This does not sound like much for one household - but if quite a few do this - the whole effect will make a huge difference. Start learning them today.
